Massage and/or bodywork - (of which there are many ie. Shiatsu, Esalen, Feldenkais, Reiki, Rolfing, Neuromuscular, Swedish, Reflexology, etc.) was first practiced in India 8,000 years ago and in China over 5,000 years ago. It has been historically recorded and well-known to physicians of ancient Greece in the 5th century noting that the way to health is a scented bath and an oiled massage daily. Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue and muscles promoting relaxation by increasing circulation or blood flow and sinus/lymphatic drainage, thus relieving pain, spasms, and soreness all of which relax the mind and body restoring calmness and balance. Massage helps open all channels of the body, insures good circulation of energy and brings vigor and vitality (prana). Bodywork includes stretching techniques, pilates, weight bearing exercises, etc.
