COLD, COMMON: - a cold begins with a virus or bacteria that penetrates the bodies immune system causing irritation to the nose with increase in mucus formation and sneezing (see Congestion, Nasal page), perhaps watery eyes and a sore throat. It can have a slow or sudden onset, is rarely associated with fever and you may experience mild fatigue, weakness, a cough and some chest discomfort. It is often highly contagious.

Self Help(1) Prepare homemade chicken soup and add garlic cloves. (2) Drink 6-8 glasses of liquids or more a day (hot teas, fruit juices and water). (3) Take a brisk walk daily. (4) Increase your Vitamin C, or Ester C and Zinc intake. (5) Keep warm (especially your feet/TCM). (6) Eat lightly with good nutrition and rest. (7) Oil pulling (oil chelation) with unrefined sesame or sunflower oil.

If your condition persists longer than 2-5 days it may be the flu, bronchitis or pneumonia. Consult your healthcare provider.

Various pranayama exercises (breathe and slow down) help to control the breathing process, control activities of the mind and increases the power of concentration. Yoga: Bow, Cobra, Locust positions. Herbs: Vasaka, garlic, ginger, basil. They can also assist in curing nasal infections, colds and respiratory infections. Jalneti cleans the sinus area and heals a sore throat; gargle with hot water and lemon, rest. Coffee and black teas are analgesics.

Drink: hot lemonade, plenty of fluids, chicken soup. Eat: foods rich in Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, cabbage, green peppers, parsley, carrots, turnip, broccoli, blackberries, garlic boosts immunity, ginger, shellfish, onions, thyme, lemons and cloves. Zinc found in oysters/beef. Avoid alcohol and tobacco while healing.

Herbs: echinacea & goldenseal boost immunity, catmint, fenugreek seeds for congestion, elderflower for catarrh, cats claw, elderberry (Sambucol), ginger. Anise seeds reduce phlegm. Wild cherry bark and/or linden flowers soothes a cough/throat. Eucalyptus steam loosens mucus. Teas: Coltsfoot, mullein, horehound, yarrow, slippery elm, Pau d’Arco, hyssop, red clover.

Homeopathy Aconitum, allium cepa, arsenicum, belladonna, kali bichromicum, bryonia, pulsatilla, nux vomica, hydrastis, sanguinaria, natrum mur, hepar sulph. Oscillococcinum must be taken w/i 48 hrs of onset of symptoms. Remedies are based on specific associated symptoms.
Naturopathic Increase Vitamin C w/bioflavonoids. Add Vitamin A w/beta-carotene, garlic capsules, protein supplement, Vitamin B complex. Quercetin Plus. Acidolphilus liquid. Apply hot ginger compresses to chest. Do hot baths, hot broths, brandy & lemon, catnip enemas. Zinc lozenges (gluconate, ascorbate & glyccinate) Limit the amount of sugar consumed including fruits to 50 grams per day.

Formulas: Bi Yan Pian for congestion, and Chuan Xin Lian Antiphlogistic pills for when clearing infections. Ma Huang (ephedra sineca) - its stems contain ephedrine and pseudoephedrine which are used in over-the-counter medicines.
