GINGIVITIS (GUM DISEASE): Is an inflammation or infection of the
gums caused by breathing through your mouth, eating soft foods, faulty dental work or ill-fitting filling/prostheses,
smoking, improper brushing, excessive sugar/drug/alcohol consumption, or a vitamin deficiency which can create excessive bacterial
growth, mucus and the collection of food particles in and around the gums/teeth. When this happens the gums become swollen, redden,
soften, are shiny and the teeth can be painful, loose, and bleed. Eventually, if the appropriate oral hygiene regime is not implemented,
pockets, plaque and calculus (tartar) formations collect on the teeth causing other serious conditions
to occur such as pyorrhea, periodontal disease, loss of bone and teeth. Research indicates that about 90% of
all disease may originate in our mouths…
Self Help – 1. Oil pulling (oil chelation). 2.Brushing teeth (w/baking soda) 2-3 x's a day. Use an electric
toothbrush and/or waterpik (clean/sterilize frequently; mold and bacteria can accumulate on surfaces, in reservoirs and wands). 3. Floss well every day. 4. Rinse the oral cavity with the appropriate mouth wash and/or (gargle w/salt water). Some can be allergic to the alcohol
or saccharides in standard mouthwashes; therefore, consult a Compounding Pharmacy. See your dentists if symptoms do not improve within 2-5 days. |

Ayurveda

Massage Gums: Coconut oil, goldenseal, bayberry, myrrh.
Oil pulling w/unrefined sesame or sunflower oil for 2-5 minutes or more, then brush w/catechu and neem powder
paste. Amla powder (5 grams) in 1 cup water daily. If you can't brush after every meal, chew on cardamom or cloves to disinfect the mouth, or the use of tender
twigs like neem (margosa tree or Azadirachta indica), kikar (Babul or Acacia arabica), tejphal (toothache tree or
zanthoxylum armatum) are recommended. The leaves and twigs of these trees can also be made into powders. |
Food Therapy/
Nutrition |
Avoid: Acid forming foods (colas, sugars, tomatoes,
carbonated drinks and carbohydrates). Eat: Fruits and vegetables high in Vitamin C. Raw crunchy foods to stimulate
and exercise the gums include apples, salads, seeds, nuts,
cereal, broccoli, citrus, papaya, peppers, green leafy
vegetables, whole grains, meat, high fiber foods. Cultured
foods for digestive flora. Rub gums with honey, lemon juice
or strawberries. Consume juices high in betacarotenes such as
cantaloupe, carrot. Black tea and coffee can stain teeth.

Western |
Herbs: Goldenseal/myrrh, tea tree oil, aloe vera/myrrh,
cayenne, witch hazel. Teas: chamomile, calendula for healing gum tissues. Hawthorn berries, sage, thyme, rose hips for inflammation.
Paste: Use 1 capsule echinacea and mix with a little water; rub on appropriate gums at night. Echinacea will increase saliva drawing
out infection. Mouth wash infusion: Sage or chamomile, bloodroot (sanguiarine). White Oak bark can be used as a tea for mouthwash and gargle, or as a
paste.
Grapefruit seed extract. Massage gums with clove or allspice oil for soreness. Natural whitening toothpaste: Sea salt,
fresh lemon juice, baking soda. Peach pit tea can be used as a rinse 2-3x's/day for mild irritations. Apply a moistened comfry teabag or an ice pack to a sore tooth. Chew cardamom seeds.

Holistic |
Toothpaste: Use propolis, or goldenseal powder. Change toothbrushes
every month. Use hydrogen peroxide or grape seed extract (1-2 drops per cup of water) for storing or cleansing your toothbrush, wash it thoroughly before use.
Use unwaxed floss daily. Scrape your tongue daily. Massage for the gums: Sea salt, eucalyptus oil, lobelia extract, clove oil, baking soda.
After brushing or flossing rinse your mouth with a folic acid solution for a minute. Use tooth picks with (tea tree oil) melaleuca alternifolia oil
between meals (check for allergies
before using). Air abrasion is used
to painlessly remove tooth decay without drilling, can save more of the natural tooth and is less invasive. Fluoride (a mineral) is used to strengthen
the underlying structures of the teeth but is debated by many practitioners. Check the internet for fluoride vs. thyroid function.
Research has revealed that there may be a link between (HRT) and a decrease in tooth loss for menopausal women. Mercury fillings (also known as amalgam fillings) -
may deplete your system of selenium and glutathione. |

Homeopathy |
Kali Phos., Mercurius, Kreosotum, Natrum mur. Remedies are based on associated specific symptoms.

Naturopathic |
Effective natural toothpaste: Two parts sodium bicarbonate
and one part table salt. Baking soda is a dentifrice and is
highly alkaline which neutralizes plaque acids and eliminates
bacteria that cause tooth decay. Vitamin E internally or rubbed on gums.
Vitamin B complex daily. Liquid chlorophyll before meals. Quercetin plus w/bromelain for inflammation.
CoQ10. Rub: Paste of Ascorbate Vit C powder w/rutin and bioflavonoids & water. Lysine.
Evening Primrose Oil. Calcium-magnesium. Vitamin A - large doses for the first three days, then taper off.
Grape seed extract. Proteolytic enzymes with pancreatin. Zinc.
